If you've got an oxy/acetylene torch, or can borrow one, heat that part of the muffler cherry red and it'll come off. Any other method will probably wreck the muffler and/or the exhaust pipe.

If you can get at the bottom of the muffler tailpiece--take a small sharp chisel and hammer. If the muffler is already slit at bottom - open the slit wider with chisel until you can work muffler loose. Worked for me. Had no torch or electricity.

Muffler does have slits in it. I was thinking of cutting it off at at the slits but not sure if I can save the muffler then.

Yes, it's hard to save the muffler that way. My muffler was ready for replacement anyway.

if you can get it loose, unscrew the pipe coming out of the manifold with the muffler still attached. You can then work it in a vice or on the bench. Too much banging or sideways pressure will put cracking/breaking the manifold at risk. New muffler's are not that expensive, if you are willing to use a TSC one.

IMHO.
