There is a junk 1066 at a sale this weekend. Will the engine bolt in to the 1256?Is there a lot of Mods' nessesary? Thanks,Steve

Wouldnt much bolt up from the bell housing forward. Wider front engine mount, side rails, steering bolster, all quite different. It could be done but require lots of changes (cobbling).

The 407 in the 1256 is narrower than the 400 series engines in the 66 and later series IH's. Like the other poster said swaping from the bellhousing forward is an option, but a 414/436/466 doesn't fit without new frame rails/sheet metal/ect. into the 1256. I myself prefere the look of a 56 over the later machines. Have you looked into rebuilding? One of the big issues with the 407's is the price of a crankshaft. The 407 crank is basicly non weldable. Hence prices of $1000+ are not unheard of for a good crank. Have you looked for a combine engine? The 915's came with a turbo'd 407 for a while.
Good luck

Jason is wrong you can use the frame rails of the 1256 and sheet metal .Most of the guys around here use the 66 series rails and use the rest of the 56 parts need to put two shims between rails and front bolster because of the width difference. You will have to add lengh to the 56 hood or find a 1456 one,I'm useing a 560 hood.

I have a 1456 that someone cobbled a 400 series in stil has the original bell housing and frame rails. No a 1456 hood does not fit. Its still to short. The 400 series will go and it will be put back right. I have a dt407 for your 1256 go to piture adds here on YTmag and type in DT407 in the search. Buy it from me and do it right.
