H4 magneto problems/questions

I"m in the process of eliminating a few headaches I have been having with my hard starting 48 farmall h. The mag has intermittent/weak spark. Points and condenser are new and the Points are gapped properly at .013". The impulse coupling is snapping strongly. Spark is still weak/intermittent. Now that the background information is all laid out, here come the questions. 1. Is there a way to check the coil with a multi-meter? 2. Where are the magic magnets located in this thing and how would a person go about testing them?

Coil should be checked with a coil tester. Magnets are part of the rotor. They seldom go bad. Did you clean the points after gapping them? Was the new condenser tested?

Points were dressed. Not sure how to test the condenser. Most of my mag experience has been with small lawnmower type engines so I'm kinda flying blind here

The magnets are in the side of the body easy way to check is just put a screwdriver or anything metsl to wee how strong they are i have never seen one with bad magnets. I have found that sometimes after taking the mag apart that the poles of the magnets are rusty and after cleaning them had much better spark.

Is the set screw for the dynamic half of the points set tight and the wire connector not touching the housing at all?

Just had a similar dilemma with a Farmall M I would like to buy. If you have not already done so, undo the four screws which secure the magneto coil cover. Remove the cover, being careful not to lose the screws or the paper gasket. Check that the contact on the magneto coil is clean. Check that the spring contact inside the coil cover is clean. A greenish build-up can grow and reduce or eliminate spark, despite perfect points, condenser etc.
