what alternator?

hey guy"s i wanna go with a single wire 12v alternator for my 300. what alternators can i walk up to at the Napa counter and ask for.
im really looking to save space so a Japanese version would be better me thinks. if i could get an apllication for this single wire alt like a year and model car it goes to that would help.....thanks

You are probably not going to be able to buy a single wire hook up alternator by application for an automobile. They didnt come that way.

If you "search" this forum, there is a good, detailed article on how to do your alternator.(it is part of the 12 volt conversion article.)

Jegs Performance sells one wire alternators.I am not sure they make a "small bodied"single wire,or not???? It isnt that difficult to make a 3 wire alternator work correctly. You could use a newer style Delco off of a 2002 S 10 Blazer? You will have to change the pully to a V belt instead of serpentine.

This may sound a silly suggestion, but why not just fit a 12 volt Delco generator? It will easily provide all the charge required for a tractor unless you have 150 watt halogen lights everywhere. Saves heaps of hassle. Just fit generator, regulator, change bulbs and forget about it after that.

if you have a place close that works on gen, starters , they can and probly* have one , so simple hook 1 wire and good to go -- my 4020 has 1 best thing i ever did was switch it to 12v

One-wire alternators are "speed parts" for custom cars. You should be able to simply ask for a one-wire Delco 10SI alternator at the auto parts store.

Like others have said, NO production car has ever been equipped with a one-wire alternator from the factory.

Do NOT put a 12V Delco generator on there as someone else suggested. You are not eliminating any of the problems, like the regulator that wants to constantly flake out, like the complicated wiring...

Needed a replacement on a 664. Went with Advance Auto"s DriveWorks brand #P7127SE for about $45.00(15$.00 core charge).

It is a standard size one wire alternator, The guy at Advance could not tell me what vehicles it fit but that they stocked it just mainly for tractor conversions. Can say how it works yet, for this is a next weekend project.
Hope this helps, maybe NAPA can cross the part number to their brand .
Good luck

Might be TOO much unfo.but the ONLY difference on a 3 wire 10 SI Delco and a 1 wire 10 SI Delco alternator is the voltage regulator installed in it. Like have said before, the 1 wire "self exicting" voltage regulators for the 1 wire alternators come in different "turn on" capacitys. You will be better to have the one that has a LOWER turn on capability. It works better for lower RPM engines like we are dealing with on these tractors.

If you have the "higher"turn on voltage regulator, you will most likely have to "goose" the throttle to high to get it to take off charging.

Here again,NOT the original question you were asking.

Hooking that Nissan alternator is not one wire!
Run a 14 gauge wire from the S terminal to the big stud for the 10 gauge wire. This is about a 5 inch wire and terminal end for both ends.
Next run a wire from the L terminal to a 15 ohm 10 watt resistor (radio shack) then to the ignition switch if it has distributor ignition.
If it has a Mag ignition, Search for Janicholson Mag ignition in the search for box in Parts and pieces. Jim
