H Brake Seal Problem

I finally got around to pulling the leaking brake seal today. I used a drywall screw and a slide hammer. There were two of the newer style of seals. They pulled out easily with the slide hammer, but as you may be able to see in the attached pic, my screw went through both seals and poked a hole in the part behind the seals. (no damage to the bearing itself) Will this be a simple pull out and replace, or is this part of the bearing retainer cage? Any advice is appreciated, as always.

I think the damaged part is part of the bearing. The parts diagram does not show anything else that I can see. To replace the bearing, the bull pinion bearing cage has to come out. That"s the flange and cage that holds the bull pinion bearings and shaft/gear. To get that out, you have to open the transmission (some say you can do it through the PTO opening) and take the bull gear off the axle and drop it down so it"s not in mesh with the pinion gear. When in mesh, the bull gear blocks the cage and it can"t come out. The pinion shaft and bearings come out to the inside. So you have to pull the housing, bearings and pinion shaft as a unit and then you can remove the shaft and bearings. All that said, if you think the bearing is not damaged (besides the retainer ring, I"d rotate things and see that all runs smoothly with no noise and put her back together. It"ll be a big job to replace the bearing.

I checked the parts diagram also, and I can't tell if it's part of the bearing cage, or part of the old seal. The "lip" I poked a hole in is 1/4" away from the bearing, so I know the bearing is OK. And it looks to me like it's a press-fit, and could be pulled out and replaced the same way as the seals were. But I'd like to know more before I try it!

Can't think that a drywall screw would go into the outer bearing race, it's hard steel, it could be a piece left over from the original seal. Again, a drywall screw won't go into hardened steel

It looks to me like the outer shell of the old original seal is still in place and someone put seals inside of it. Just collapse that whole outer shell and dig it out and get the right size seals. The original seal was two seals inside of an outer shell.

I was going to ask if the old seals came apart in three pieces. I got 2 seals out and there's a "cup" left in the housing, and the screw went thru the seals and into the bottom of the "cup", which has a 1/4 gap between it and the bearing. I'll check the old seals for part numbers tomorrow. I'm thinking the "cup" is part of the old style seal and will have to come out. Obviously this is my first H brake seal work!

Dave, Just did these seals on my H, I got mine from the local bearings & drive shop,my invoice shows national oil seal part # 416444, I'm pretty sure they were Timken boxes, I paid $12.51 ea.

You put a ding in the bearing cage. I would ignore it and never even think of it again. In my opinion it is cosmetic damage. Do get the sheet metal band out of the hole. (Remnant of seal/s) Jim
