single wire alternator

if i install a single wire GM alternator in my ih 300, is the volt regulator on the tractor eliminated? does anyone have a wire diagram for a single wire setup?
oh im also would like to install a 12 v batt.

With a single wire alternator,it is the ONLY hookup. It runs from either right to the + on the battery,or I have mine ran to the post on the starter swith that sits on the starter that comes right from the battery hot(Super M)

Mine runs from the alt. to the amp guage and also added the ground wire. If you have any 6 v lights or anything 6 v you will have to change them over to 12 v or they will burn out.I also changed mine over to - ground instead of + ground. If it shows discharge switch the wires on the amp guage and it will show charge. To check if it is charging just remove one of the battery cables. if it stays running you are all set.

Good point whig.

I left alot of detail out.mine does run through the ammeter before the battery. If it shows discharge while running, you need to reverse the wire on it.(Probably still wired for your 6v Pos ground still????)

ALL lights wiil have to be changed to 12 v.A 12 volt battery, grounded negative. It will not hurt the starter.

DO NOT forget a ballast resistor for the coil.(NAPA part # IC 34)The coil will have to have it's wires reversed,as well.+ will hook to the ballast, the other side of the balast goes to the ignition switch. The negative side of the coil NOW hooks to the points lead out of the distributor.

Did not realize that you were still 6v system.Any more questions, just ask.

DO NOT remove a cable to check if it is charging. That is a good way to fry the regulator and diode trieo. Use a voltmeter. Should show around 14 volts.

Yea,you do not need the voltage regulator at all.The main hot lead going to it needs to be eliminated.

You do not need a very big alternator at all.Since you are using the Delco alternator, you really dont need anything bigger than a 55 amp.Even that is too much.I think a 37 amp was the smallest 10SI delco they made??? It isnt going to cause any issues. They do make them with a "low turn on" regulator. This kind will be more beneficial for low RPM tractors like we are using, seeing how they are all about 1500-2000 rpm max,on average. If you use a one wire alternator set up for a car(regular turn on regulator)you will have to "goose up" the throttle to get it to start charging.
I am not sure how small you can get a single wire Delco in????
