Brake seals, Farmall C

Trying to damn up a fluid leak on my brake drum and band. The parts manual suggests part #63090D as a seal. It goes inside the brake shaft. However the pic suggest another seal, but there is no part number in the entire parts manual for it. I'm lost.

I haven't changed one in 10 years, but the book is correct--can't tell for sure, but I think yours is in backwards.

I see you have all the bolts removed from that shaft housing. DON'T try to pull it if you haven't removed the bull gear from inside the case. The housing is notched out and fits over the bull gear, if you force it you WILL break it.

You can beat the old seal to death and pry it out without any further dis assembly. The original seals were double thickness with two lips. The new seal is probably thinner, and there is probably room in the housing for two of them. You need to be sure that the drum is not rough or grooved where the seal rides in it. If it is smooth, but grooved, use one thin seal and try to install it so that it does not ride in the groove.

Used to be the napaonline site would le you look up and cross numbers. Their link for that seems to wasnt totake me to a page about AAA benefits (beats AARP at least) ..

Anyway, NAPA or any good counterman can cross it for you. The NAPA part#s have prefix NOS (for N
NAPA Oil Seal) and the numeric part is the same as the Chicago Rawhide number for the seal, so if you can find a chart to cross to CR, that will be the NAPA number as well.

Yes it does, you have to look at the rear axle and differential on p 128-129. #1 on page 129 says 351108R91.

The picture you posted looks strange to me. The seal mounts on the inside of the inside brake disc (#1). Once you take the drum and fiber discs off the inside disc surface (#1) is exposed. This prys out of the bearing carrier (#6) and seals with an o-ring (#2), it also has the seal (#3) for the bull pinion shaft(#11). Once this is pryed out you can see the bearing (#5) that holds the bull pinion shaft and it and the shaft will just slide out as one piece. I have my 230 apart right now ( same brakes ) but I don't have any pictures to show you. I could post some later if you need more info. Craig

Thanks Craig, The illustration makes sense now... I did not put the diagram together in my head. I was able to get a seal from Napa. I really appreciate your(s) and the other folk's advice!!
