1066 engine help

Hi everyone.

So here's the story. Had an engine built for my 1066 about 10 years ago. Old one threw a rod because of a casting issue. Since engine built, tractor never has had to work hard until this year. Put it on a manure pump. Learned quickly that the turbo was bad so replaced that. But here is the issue:

Getting a lot of blow by. Get the tractor under load and if we run it over 1500 RPM she will chug along and then puke oil/fuel mixture out of blow by pipe. Before I start ripping head and oil pan off to check valves and rings, any one have any ideas? Engine is a 414. Fuel pump not turned up (did initially to get around bad turbo but that made her puke more so turned it back down).

Thanks

Tom

that's what I'm afraid of. Anybody got ideas of how to set the rings
without tearing it apart and starting again?

Run it under load for about 20 hours. If it doesn't get any better you may have the wrong ring in the second groove for the side mounted breather. The wider ring gap requires the top mounted breather to eliminate oil being pushed out the side.

Hook it to a 20 ft. bushhog or a 10ft. offset harrow and work the stew out of it for 2 good days, if that doesn't help, will need rings possibly. Hope that works for you. We had a 1466 that did that one time and pulling hard with it helped it out alot, still has a bit of blowby, but not near as bad as it was.

Pull the air cleaner and throw a handfull of Bon Ami cleaning powder into the air intake while the engine is running. (Do not use Comet as it is too scratchy.) This will seat the rings but will also build up under the rings so engine life is compromised. You do not have much to lose and this may help for a while. The only real fix is to pull the engine down and do an in-frame.

My 966 w/M&W turbo did the same thing at about 10,000 hours. I put the other style breather on it. Was off a 466 truck engine. That was over 2,000 hours ago. Still haven't been inside the engine. The truck style breather mounts same as the original, but the tube comes out the top of the breather and any blowby flows back into the motor instead of out. Also, you could put the breather on from an 86 series 414, 436 or 466 tractor motor. It attaches on top of the valve cover and keeps the blowby inside. Either way the vapors and pressure leave the motor and keep the oil inside. You will need to put that tractor to some serious work to seat the rings. Wayne

is it a new turbo or another turbo been navistar truck engine tech for 11 years when seals go out of turbo they will put boost in the crank case. also how did you find other turbo bad did it run away.

She's gummed up and slobbering on you. Is it using oil? Some blow by is normal on these tractors. If it was mine I would change the oil and maybe just pull the pan, clean the sludge out of it and run it. It's an old plow tractor I ran a 1066 and a 1466 for years. They don't like to be babied.

What brand and weight of engine oil are you running? I have seen these drink 15-40 badly, but do just fine on 30w, like they were originally designed for use with.
Otherwise, I'd agree with the "take it out and pull the guts out of it" train of thought....rings may well be gunked up.
Nothing to loose by trying.
