I am a little confused as to time my farmall A hand start...I am very familiar with Green but not so much with red...I do have a pretty good understanding of all and have gone thru my mag and got good spark...I have it set to just before #1 impulse....but where my problem is seems pretty stupid to me...which one is #1 cylinder???...I assume it is the cylinder closest to the fan but when looking at the stamping on the side of the block it gives me the impression that it is the cylinder closest the seat???...This was a running tractor when I took the mag off just not running good and wanted to freshen things up a bit and eliminate some problems...but now she don't run at all so I created more problems....also one last thing roughly what position should the coupler on the governor be in when I am at TDC on #1 cylinder..I found a video on timing a cub and was using that as a guide but is it different for a A????....any help would be great and thank you for reading this.

#1 is at the front.

The timing procedure for an "A" and a Cub would be the same.

Yes like other post said #1 is the one on the front. Now you need to remove the plug so you can look in the hole with a small mag lite then you can see when the piston comes to the top thats when the mag . With the cap off you will see the rotor move now you need to see where the rotor is is line with the cap. I make a mark where the tower on the cap is for #1 which is around the 2 oclock position then as you turn the engine over you will see the rotor go to that position before it fires. the gears driving the rotor can be moved so the rotor is lined up on the cap There is no timing the mag as when it fires on tdc to start the timing will go to 32deg when the engine runs so get the rotor to line up with the tower and thats all theres to it.

Make sure thet #1 piston is coming up on compression by putting your finger in the spark plug hole and listening for escaping air as the crankshaft is rotated (by someone else?).

when I timed my cub I removed number 1 plug, put your finger in the hole, turn engine over by hand until you feel air comming out of the hole. Now watch crank pully for notch on pully to line up with the pointer and stop there,Now install the mag, The slot should be about 2 oclock,Turn the mag all the way in to the engine, tighten the 2 bolts finger tight so you can still move it.Now slowly turn the mag away from the engine until you hear the mag snap.Tighten it there. The mag should be timed now you can line up the rotor with number 1 on the cap and you should be all set to start it, hope this helped, Wayne

(quoted from post at 14:34:10 11/04/11) Make sure thet #1 piston is coming up on compression by putting your finger in the spark plug hole and listening for escaping air as the crankshaft is rotated (by someone else?).

If you don't have anyone else to help, you can also pull the valve cover and watch the rocker arms for #1 open and close, then look for the timing mark, and slowly advance it until it is in line with the pointer, and that will be close enough to Top Dead Center compression stroke for #1 cylinder to get you timed correctly.

Now, do you know how to static time a Farmall magneto?

Thank you all for your help...to make a long story short I was off a little on my mag...I had it preset before the impulse on #1 instead of after...once I got that figured out all is good now...again thanks.
