Does PTO share trans/hydraulic fluid on 504?

Just got this tractor, changing all the fluids on it and i see in the shop manual i have it does have a capacity of 2 quarts for the PTO but i dont see any info about draining it or filling it.

How do i go about doing this or is it a common sump system with the transmission? It is a 1965, gas, ta, with power steering, remote hydraulics, 12/4.5 gpm pumps.

The pto rear unit has a separate drain and level
plug. I usually fill through the breather in top. Hy
tran, same as trans.

I dont see a breather or a drain on my pto, just a 1" or so hole for what i assume is to access clutch adjustment. I dont see a drain either. Here are a few pics i snapped in the dark, i will pressure wash off and get better pics tomorrow if you need.

Is this what they normally look like or do i have a different one? I dont see any vent or drain or level plug on the side. It doesnt look like the one in the manual either. Is it possible this shares its fluid with the transmission or itsa dry clutch?

I've done some research, and that looks like the "normal" PTO for a 504.

It looks very different from a 460's PTO, which has the engagement lever on the right side, along with a breather and a drain.

Here's what I'm talking about:

I would've expected the 504's PTO to be the same as a 460's because they share most of the same rear end components.

Thanks! So it doesnt have its own pto resivoir then? I dont see a drain plug anywhere on it asside from unbolting it. I guess i can pop out adjustment plug and have a look to see what the fluid looks like if its new like the fluid i put in or what. Does the 460 have a separate fluid for the pto clutches?

It looks like I stand corrected. After looking in
the parts book it appears they leave the front seal
out of pto and let oil circulate from rear frame.
Other wise all the components look the same except
lever on opposite side. We never sold a 504.

Well, glad im not crazy haha. I pressure washed it all off today and still couldnt find anything even close. So how does it work? I am just unlatching the pto lever and pulling it back, it seems to engage at a certain place and hold there. Am i using it correctly? I know the TA is very particular about how it is adjusted. I put my 5ft bushog on it today and ram some sapplings and large briers at the edge of woods over with it. it never really bogged down, and nothing slipped at all. My to30 would never have ever mowed that down. One sappling was about 3" in diameter and it made alot of noise and jammed in the blade plate, but didnt slip anything. i guess everything is working pretty good on this tractor then.

I did notice the fluid is still a milky color when its running and a little foamy. when i let it sit it settles out and looks fine but i did drain about 1.5 gal of water out of housing when i changed the fluid, poured a few gallons of new in to flush it, so is this normal or should i run it a little longer, let the filter clean it out some, then drain it and swap filter again?

Sometimes it can take 2-3 oil changes to get all the milky out. If you're not going to keep the tractor inside, I wouldn't bother wasting the oil on trying to get all the water out.

Haha yeah the tractor will not be stored in doors. its a tractor, it should be able to withstand the elements. to30 has been out there for 57 years and is fine. This 504 fires right up even in <40 degrees today without even choking it.
