IH 656 Hydro

I'm going to look at a 656 Hydro and don't really know what to check with the Hydro. What should I look for? Will the used Hydro dollar me to death? Are they prohibitive to get repaired? Thanks
 
We love and use the snot out of our 656 diesel hydro. Many people run from these as the cost of rebuilding the hydro is very high. Most of the time its a matter of cleaning filters, adjustments, and clean fluid. Great universal tractor.
 
Just to give you an idea of cost to replace the hydro, my neighbor had to have his rebuilt about 2 years ago, cost him 6,500 dollars to have the international dealer do it.
 
I'm not familiar with the hydro in IH tractors, but I will echo what Mark W. said... clean filters and fluid. Hydrostatic drives hate contaninant, and this includes water.
 
had a 656 gas hydro on the farm years ago, could hear it growling half a mile away. had a 606 gas with torque amplifier also, when wheel harrowing, pulled somewhat the same. but if you didn't fill up the 656 at lunchtime, more than 3/4 empty, would never make it till 5 pm. 606 would go all day. Just another thought to consider.
 
I have a 826Hydro.Love it!!Bout the same fuel consumption as my 706(310).Easy to test:put in Hi,open throttle,foot on brake,push S/R lever forward.If it stalls,severly loads the engine,its ok.Do not do this on a'cold' transmission.Obtw,the hydro will pull just as much as a gear transmission-more in some cases.

When I was a kid Grandpa had a standard shift 656 and uncle Mike had a hydro 656. These were both hi clearance utilities that we field worked. Both pulled 4 bottom plows. The hydro would lug down more, it was slower than pulling the torque back on the standard. We used the hydro on the hay bailer and corn planter. Very handy for any pro work.
