Here are photos of the on-going building of violins. Left one has the finish done and "curing", middle one is ready for the finish to begin, right one is midway in the finish process.

This is a project of a friend and I. We have 3 more in various stages of carving, shaping, fitting, sanding, scraping and gluing. Our very first one has been complete for a couple years and is being played by my friend.

Any idea as to what a violin like this should be worth? The only part that isn't hand carved or made is the neck and scroll area.

They look very nice, congratulations to you and your friend. I do not know how to value things like that, usually when I sell instruments I decide the price based on how long it takes me to build them plus what the materials cost. For instance I have sold four banjos in the past couple of years, the materials cost about $300,(that hardware is expensive, the wood is only about $10) the first one I sold for $500 and the rest for $600, which comes out to about $10-15 an hour depending how efficiently I work. It is not a way to get rich, but I really enjoy it. Best of luck with the violins, I will be interested to hear how they turn out and what you decide to do with them. I have not yet begun my violin #2 but I hope to before Christmas.

Greetings, Zach:

It was fun to see that someone else is interested in tractors AND violins. I've been a violinmaker for over forty years now and owned a violin shop in Arlington, VA for many of those years. After moving to Indiana about a decade ago, I became interested in antique tractors and have restored a Ford, Farmall and Case.

Please tell about your experience with violins and tractors. Where are you located?

Harold,

I know Zach is in New York state, western part I believe. I'm in Southern Minnesota. I've partially restored a John Deere 50 tractor.

Do you play violin? I started to learn at age 60. Too old to get REALLY good at it. As I remember, Zach plays violin and banjo, maybe others.

Looks like a very nice bass. Hope I'm correct on that as I'm pretty sure it's too big to be a cello.

What does DMA stand for?

Check out the site of my friend Phillip Soltis. He makes bases, Cellos, and violins. I made him a contour milled Cbout form (heated with 3 electric heaters and a thremostatically controlled power supply. (radical piece of copper at about 70 pounds!) Jim
