I have a 300IH utility. I replaced the voltage regulator and the needle keeps wanting to show discharge. If I tap the regulator box it will return to + but will eventually return to -. Makes no sense! Can someone steer me rightly, in very simple terms! Thanks in advance.
This is a 6 volt system

A new voltage regulator should be OK. The issue is needing one assessmant before condeming the VR. With a good volt meter (Digital is good only if it is capable of reading well in noisy old systems, most do not) The voltage should be 7 to 7.2 volts when the meter leads are across the battery at 3/4 throttle. If this is the case, all is well. These systems do not charge at idle. At 1/2 throttle it will pickup and charge. Less, and it will go to a little below zero on the gauge due to coil draw. The tractors were made to run making power all day. If it does not make that voltage, and you have charged the battery and it is still low at fast engine speeds, take the regulator back. Good luck.
