1947 Cub wiring

I bought my 2nd Cub last weekend. Before I even attempted to start it, I wanted to re-wire due to bad (bare) wires, a simple toggle switch for the lights and more. The person gave me the 4-position light switch that was on it, so I re-installed exactly like my H and per a diagram I thougth was right. When I tried to install the + (ground) cable I get a spark. the only way I found so far to stop the spark is to remove the wire from the starter to the amp gauge. I have switched out VR's from the H and still the same.

Does anyone have any advice or help - please

Thanks

Gene,

What I have is this:

one side of amp gauge is wire to the starter lug
other side has wire to light switch, one to BAT on VR, and one to ignition switch
wire from VR to F lug on gen
wire from VR to A lug on gen

thats pretty much it. If I take the wire off the from amp gauge to starter off, I can then put the ground cable on.

(quoted from post at 10:37:47 11/02/11) If I take the wire off the from amp gauge to starter off, I can then put the ground cable on.
Repeat that experiment with each of the 3 wires on the other side of the ammeter. Whichever one eliminates the spark when removed is the path to follow for the problem. Likely to be one of the 2 switches or the cut-out. You sure you have the ignition turned off?
