I just set it for DC V <20 and hook it up to the battery. A 6V generator needs to put out at least 7V to charge a 6V battery. If you have a 3 brush generator you can move the third brush to change the voltage. I think John T has some good troubleshooting guides on here somewhere, when I find them I print them and put them in my tractor book!
