2 times this week I when to startit up and it acted like the engine was locked up and I could not turn over the engine with a hand crank. I used a pipe wrench on the shaft on the front of engine and was able to get engine free by turning the engine in a back rotation when it popped loose. I then was able to use the starter and it stared up good. I used the tractor for 2 days on and off and then it locked up again. I did the same thing again by turning the engine in a back rotation until it popped loose, started good and run very smooth. What could make this locking up of the engine happen and what needs to done to correct this

Starter is locking up, just loosen starter next time to make sure . Most likely needs new starter drive and possibly ring gear on flywheel.

You don't need to loosen up the starter.

Just turn off the ignition, put the tractor in 5th, and rock it back and forth. I've been able to unlock the starter from the seat just by pushing on the tire with my foot.

Mine did that when I had only had it a few months, found out that it only had one bolt holding the starter on and it was loose. I should have checked that sooner.

Everyone has pretty much said it. Not anything else to add except take the starter out and check the bendix and also the teeth on the ring gear on the flywheel.

I have rocked many a tractor to unlock a starter,
BUT, it does not always work. Last year I took my
own M for a ride to look at a pheasant hunting spot
before season and had to walk back home to get a
wrench and believe me I rocked it pretty darn hard.
You can also damage the armature doing it that way.
Best to loosen starter.

when you take the starter off to check you might find a mouse nest in there jamming the gears. both mine and my neighbors (100 and A ) had that problem.

Replacing the starter drive with a new style drive with a cushioned pinion, and a much smaller spring is a dramatic improvement over the original. Not radically expensive. Jim
