I have a late "51 I just picked up. Where any of these the 281 engines, or didn"t any of them get out until 1953? Next, it has some leaks I plan to tend to. The belt pulley takes up a lot of space by the hydraulics so I was thinking of removing it as I do not have a use for it anyway and blocking it off. This does not affect my hydraulics in anyway does it. And last, I have access to a live pump from a 400. If I installed that, what all would need to be done to make my system live? Do I need to change something with the belly pump, or remove it, or???? Thank you in advance for any imput.

The 281 came out in 56 with the 450. The 264 came out in 52 with the SM. Installing the live pump from a 400 gives you a live pump. You need to keep the belly pump for the hyd resoviour. I had a SM with a m/w hyd pump and it was plummed into the belly pump, I just can't remember how they did it.

Would be Interested in that Belt Pulley.

M&W Live pump using belly as res .

Yes a plate can be bolted over the belt pulley gear box hole after the box is removed. This is a picture of one way to use the belly pump reservoir. M&W setup used a 3/4 pipe thread hole made in the lower front, at least on a lot of them. On this one the pump was removed from the reservoir and the pump drive hole in the plate pluged. There's other ways to do the setup also. Some just use the belley liftall drain for suction to pump. Only a 1/2 pipe thread opening though.
Does the block have C281 on the side or just a C281 bore?

lblocks picture shows two way hyd, not live hyd. You do this so you get downpressure.

mkirsh's picture is a little tricky because it actually shows a factory live hyd res and a belly pump used as a res, but you get the picture. You could also build a res and put it in place of the belly pump or below the gas tank or ???

Does he have to replace the front timing cover and gear if he uses the live pump?
