Crankshaft on '44 H

I'm about to remove the crankshaft on my '44 H, but noticed that after I removed the pulley there is a "key" (I'm pointing to it in the picture) which is in the way of removing the little round metal piece between that key and the gear. Do I need to remove the key, and if so, how?

That should be a standard Woodruff key, which is moon shaped. Take a brass hammer or drift punch. drive one side down which should cause the other side to pop up. Once the other end has popped up above the level of the shaft, you can use a small drift punch to drive it the rest of the way out.

I hope my description makes sense.

Jim,

No real reason to remove the key unless you want to get the metal ring off for machining the crank. Just take a chisel and hammer and bump the end of the key. It should slide up and out of the half moon slot.

Hi, yup this is just a normat key, easiest way I've found is to take a small chisel and a hammer and try lo ''lift'' one end, if it is tight and you damage it, any Napa store or other similar places should have some in stock

One of the easiest ways to remove keys is with side cutters. Grip the end of the key with the cutting edge of side cutters as close to the pliers pivot point as possible. With a firm grip on key, lift up on side cutters, prying the key out of it"s slot.
