Splitting an H, What am I missing?

Trying to pull the engine off my '43 H. Have an I & T manual and got the front bolster off, side rails off and the hidden bolt in the starter port out. Nothing seems ready to give. Engine is supported by hoist and rest of tractor is blocked up on a stand.

There are two dowel pins with threads on the outside that have no nuts on them. Put a nut on and a few washers to allow it to be pulled out. (one on each side) Jim

(quoted from post at 08:01:47 10/30/11) I think it is either 1/2 or 5/8

I think it is 5/8" IIRC it was a stupid size that I didn't have a nut on hand for. If it was 1/2" I know I would have had a nut. IIRC the belt pulley drive uses the same system.

I have split a Super A, C, Super H and 460. I never removed the dowels. I always thought they were used to guide the engine in when reinstalling. I usually can get enough clearance to insert a screwdriver and move the engine forward. But, this is moving the front end forward, I have not tried moving the rear end backward as some do. Most of the time the dowels drop out anyway -- or am I missing something?

I never remove the dowels either. Their purpose is to ensure that everything is lined up perfectly rather than relying on just the bolts which are somewhat loose in their holes.

Thanks for the help. The dowels came out easily, their removal allows a little 'twist' or rocking which helps. Removing the bolt that holds the battery ground cable really speeds things along too. LOL Anyway, engine came away easily after that, does flywheel come straight off after removing four center bolts or is there a trick in that somewhere too?

The engine may be stuck on the dowels. You may need to wiggle it some and if you can get a little movement I would use screwdrivers on both sides to help pry it off. Hal

It will come right off after you take the four bolts out. There are keepers on them...if you miss that part you probably shouldn't be working on the tractor by yourself. Pay attention to where it goes on. It will only go on one way because the bolts are offset a touch, but it is heavy enough you don't want to do it twice.

The flywheel comes straight off, sometimes not particularly easily. It is heavy, I usually put blocks under it, in case I have to drop it -- hasn't happened yet.

Thanks for the help, it all came apart and the engine is on the engine stand. Will be needing lots of advice CNKS when it comes time to paint!
