I changed oil pan gasket today. When putting back together I noticed 2 bolts 1/4 inch longer, do these go in a special spot. Also, is there contact points or something to adjust in voltage regulator. Some times it shows charge, sometimes discharge, when I tap the side of it, goes back to charge, something sticking? trying to get ready before snow flies. Thanx for any and all replies. Scott

The long bolts go in the front center below the crank into aluminum. IIRC. They are too long all other places. Jim

Jim are you thinking of another engine? At the row of bolt holes across the back of the pan theres a steel plate. Long bolts go through the plate and into the block. Install on each side of the center rear oil pan bolt hole, or each side of the stud if its still in the plate.

(quoted from post at 05:36:59 10/30/11) Thanx for the replies. They're in the 2 rear corners. Any advise on voltage regulator? Scott

They are junk or they are good. They are a sealed unit with no adjustments to my knowledge.

You are correct! My memory. I looked at the parts description, and the exploded diagram didn't even show the bolts!! Jim

There are two sets of contact points inside the voltage regualtor. With the tractor "off", remove the cover & polish the points just like a distributor with emory or a points file. Be sure to clean with a business card afterwards, start the tractor, run up around half throttle, open & close both sets of points by hand alternating back & forth while watching your amp gauge, once it begins to show it's charging, put the cover back on.
If this doesn't work, try polarizing the generator, then repeat. It will not show very many charging amps until the cover is back on.

Thanks for all the replies. new voltage reg. will be bought and bolts in the proper holes. Just bought a farmall 140 today, so i'll have plenty of questions about that. Thanks for your patience and anwsers.Scott
