Hydralic shaft seals

OK I got the countershaft nut off with a brass punch. I see it had a chip off from a previous mechanic. I found 2 seals though expecting only one. Now do I take them both out & only put 1 back in??? We're guessing the prior mechanic put a new seal over the existing seal because there is room for 2 instead of taking the old one out. If I put in 2 new seals the thinking is the outer seal wouldn't receive enough lube. Does anybody know what the idea situaion is. My tractor IH bud says he would remove both & only put in 1 new seal. Put in two and pack the space between them with chassis grease. Common solution that allows outer seal to have lube, and also misses the wear groove of the original seal. Jim

Thanks, never would have thought of that on my own. Would you do the same thing with the drive shaft above? I also need advice how to remove the drive shaft shaft coupling without splitting the tractor. Do I have to remove more pieces ahead of the spline (not sure what you call the piece that connects the motor to the transmission drive shaft). I removed the 4 hole piece connecting the drive shaft coupling to the crank shaft drive coupling but the drive shaft coupling slide's forward but hits against the crank shaft drive coupling. What do you suggest here? Thanks again, Denny

The coupling will come out. The clutch may need to be compressed by using 3 of the 6 retaining bolts (from 120 degrees apart)placed in the three tapped cover holes. This allows the disk to tilt a smidge, with your tongue just right, the shaft comes out. Jim
