how to get a pin out of shifter /housing

We are trying to get the big pin out of the gear shifter housing on a Super M. Put Kroil on it to soak for a while. Beat on it with a sledge hammer...husband is afraid to beat on it too hard so as not to break the cast raised "housing" that the lever goes into.
The lever seems to be a two piece lever with a pin holding it together inside the housing, too.

Pin seems to be stuck real good. do we need to drill it out or are we missing a secret here...

The gear shift lever is stuck in a gear, the transmission shaft turns freely...(He split the tractor)

Do you have the welch plugs out so you can see the pin? The pin is smaller than the OD of the plugs so you need to use a punch smaller than the plug to drive it out. You do not need to remove the plugs first, just use a small enough punch so you are not hitting the casting. The pin is about 7/16 in diameter so a 3/8 punch should work.

I think my H was very similar. I finally just pulled/drove the Welch plugs out, they're just lead plugs, and then the pins could come out easy. I replaced them all with Sloppy Shifter Fix parts from eBay, and it works great. (I have no affiliation with Sloppy Shifter.)

Apparently there were no plugs on either side of the raised housing, so the pin must be rusted in there.

He just needs to beat on it (the pin) more I guess...

Ok, I went out with a flashlight to get a good look, and it just looks like the end of a steel pin recessed into the hole. Scratched but not dented from beating on it.
Looking down the top of the shifter, the (same pin) INSIDE looks smaller in diameter than what looks like the pin on the outside. ???

now my husband says the other side of the pin looks dented like it may be a plug. Maybe this pin is more like a round-headed bolt and will only come out in one direction. He's going to drill into the other side to try pulling out the plug if one is there.

All of these older Farmalls have a one piece shift lever, and there is supposed to be a bell shaped cover and spring on the lever. That cover will prevent you from seeing the actual shifter pin, but maybe the bell is already missing? Personally, I've never encountered any difficulty in removing that pin. Just a hammer and a punch and it comes right out. Another thought---. Maybe that pin is worn enough that it is hanging up in the shift lever? You might try moving the shift lever forward and back while at the same time hammering on the pin. Not likely it is rusted in. If it is, you have some other, more serious issues to deal with.

Well the plug was steel (or maybe lead? ) and he got it out, the pin came right out, the shifter was so gunked up he thought there was rubber in there.
He had to scrape it off all over the lower part of the shift lever and the swivel pin and when he put the lever back down into the tranny gears it shifted well. Came back out covered with more very thick crud.

What is the best (easiest) way to clean all of that old crud out of the gears? Hopefully not having to take out the tranny, lol.

The end of the shifter looks fine, but the swivel pin is sloppy, so we are buying that Sloppy Shifter Fix from ebay, thanks for the tip!

Thanks to all who have helped, as you can see we are not used to working on heavy steel...

The best way to clean out the transmission in my experience is to remove the top cover and go at it by hand. Sometimes people will drain the gear oil, put kerosene or diesel in the transmission case and drive around gently for a while to slosh it all around, then drain and it brings a lot of the gunk with it. I have never done that, but I can say that removing the top cover is not as hard as it looks.

to clean up the rear differential, i add 2 gallons of kerosene to the differential and run the tractor. a week or so of toodling around in various gears, then pull both bottom drain plugs and let er drain. have 4 or 5 empty 5 gallon buckets handy just in case there is a lot of oil in there. an m holds about 14 gallons, i forgot what an h holds, maybe 8 or so. refill with some 80 or 90 wt oil and run it till next year. then do the kerosene add one more time.

After the top cover is off, go at it with the pressure washer or hotsy if possible. It will be like new when done. Only way to get it completely clean.

The kerosene trick gets some of the gunk out, but not all of it.

Kerosene or diesel will get the easy stuff out and will soften the rest. Get a solvent with air sprayer, about $25, they work great and get into many small places.
