HUB OFF! HOOYA

Got off work early today, was slow and internet went out.. couldn't get much email reading done.. er.. work.. .. anyway.

got home.. got the dirty clothes on.. put on my face shield, put a new cut off blade in the die grinder, and set my chissled out, hi-brite led flashlight, and can of penetrant.

located keyway, cut so that the blade passed NEXT to the key.. mad thecut on both side. during the cut the blade wore down a bit, which was good.. it let me cut all the way to the edge of the large diameter and stay out of the timin cover.

actually I did nick the paint off the cover in 2 spots while trying to position the blade.. nuttin the full paint job won't fix :)

took my time cutting, stopping alot to inspect with lamp.

cutting was making the hub darned hot and was boiling the grease and oil off it, so I would dowse it liberally with pb blaster penetrant every time I stopped.

finally got the cut 99% thru on the keyway side as far as i could get back, and 95% thru on the other side.

got the air chissle ready if needed.. figured I would get one hand chissle started then use the air chissle

tried a couple different hand chisles for fit.. first one toobig.. 2nd one looked good.. set it in the crack with the keyway use my 3lb drilling hammer, gave it a tap just to set ip, then another lil tap to set it better before I gave it a better whack.. but had to stop.. that 2nd LITTLE tap split it.. another lil tap and the crack ran all the way to the back on both sides... she was still too snug ( and hot ) to remove by hand so I set a small 2 bar puller on her, and under very light hand pressure on a wrench ont he end of the threaded bar just spun her right off like she should have been.

took her to the bench for close inspection.

here is what I found.

more globbed stuff up front of the ratchet hole, and I can see where it extruded from under the edge of the crank snout. stuff inside and protected from the environment is decidedly greay, and 99.999% unmistakeable for JB WELD. the inside bore of the pulley has striations where it looks like it had a heavy wire ball run thru the center.. or a sanding stone.

also deteced lil shreds and a thin 'red' film that came off like superglue pieces with a razor blade... red loctite maybee ?

inspection of the crank.. it looks great no marks, the keyway isn't buggered, no scratches and no cuts, it's still nice and square.. i think the prev owner had a problem with the pulley itself and buggered it up.. crank snout looks great.

seal surface was not the smootheset.. had that 'cast' feel to it.. but i've seen worse.

seal was hogged out and wore down to a nub of the lip. no wonder it poured oil...

i'm feeling a tad better.

might treat myself to a lean steak tonight and some vegitables and a salad.

thanks for all the help, and keep it in reserve. i'm SURE i will have more questions as I go.

got my manuals today, also called a guy and ordered a pulley...

still waiting on my seals and gaskets to arrive..

today is way better than yesterday..

thanks

Good job as usual...and appreciate so much your commentary with photos.

Got a question/comment for you. Since this is a "tractor" web site...and often has good "mechanical" comments as well...why the *^&%^$% you have to go off on a tangent with the steak and salad and stuff?? Now I'll go around the rest of the afternoon salivating about food. (&*((& it all.

Glad to see you adventuring into the RED world!!

Rick

You showed it whose boss!!!!

Did you notice before you pulled it if it had a lot of "runout" while it was running??? If it was "glued" on the crank, and was off center, explains the bad leak!

Here are my observations, after running a mic on and around a few things, strait edging the snout.. etc.

the pulley seemed to be spinning true, no out of round.. however.. after looking over the pulley and the snout and the keyway, here are my guesses:

1, this pulley has obviously been replaced.. ie.. it's been off and put back on.

the snout is true, not necked, not ground or machined on.. no file or wire wheel / sanding marks. lucked out there. key and set for the key are perfect.. not beat up.. no divots inthe shaft, and shaft face is clean no bet marks or houges / signs of heat or torching.

3, there are irregular shallow striations on the ID of the pulley hub.. not like milling marks where it was cast and machined.. .. and the keyway is wide and does look hand tampered with.
It's my guess this pulley was taken off and left off to rust.. or it is a replacement that rusted and was used, and the prev owner used a flat file or similar and hogged the key way out, and then took probably a sanding stone that you could chuck into a drill or die grinder and 'reamed' out the id of the pulley hub.. perhaps to remove the rust. I believe they got it a tad oversize. might still have been a press fit.. but perhaps not tight enough or they felt not tight enough. in any case, at the union of the snout end to the hub in the recess where the ratchet is I found more 'stuff' in there.. this stuff was protected from the elements, and when i chipped it out with the pick, it looks all the world like plain old grey JB WELD. I also found a red material.. not paint.. it was translucent.. reminds me of urethane or varnish red tinted.. was like hard glue.. but brittle.. foud a bead of it aft of the pulley hub at the crankshaft and a lil up the bore/id of the hub.. Again.. i surmise that after 'brudder' hogged the hole out and cut the keyway and it wasn't a real tight interference fit that they put red loctite on the snout, and then a HANDFULL of jbweld into the hub id, and then drove her on with the timing cover in place and tight, and in doing so, it on=bviously did not allow the seal and cover to pilot around the hub seal diameter, and thus wore more and allowed it to run oil. mind you all the excess jb weld extruded forward and made a near impossible to remove glop up ahead of the snout in the inner section of the pulley( had to chip out, then ream the hole before I could even get a CHASE in there )..

anyway.. that's my non scientific prognostication about how/when/why it was on, and leaked.

i see no other damage to the cover or cover gasket, crank has no thrust play and no side/side movement.. I think all the problems were in that hub pulley...

that's my guess anyway...

sorry about the food comment.. i was just so happy to get that thing off that i felt like a 'treat' see.. 51 weeks ago i was right at my first heart attack. took me 3 months to recover, and now I've had to turn into a health nut. watch my fat intake.. watch my callories.. lost some weight.. took alot out of me.. dropped to 125# and I'm 5'4"

I don't have the strength I used to have to wrangle on these tractors, so that's why I tackled this 'lil' one and not another larger trike like a ford 900/901

I exercise 30m a day.. even if it is just 3 laps around the neighborhood on the bike, or a 1 lap walking.

red meat is a treat for me.. so it was one of those special thoughts / moments :)

I can relate.....about 5 yrs ago I went through a similar episode, but mine was a stroke instead of heart attack at age 46. Dr basically told me "If it tastes good - spit it out".. :) Same type things - excercise, cholesterol medicine, aspirin a day, etc, etc. Beats the alternative though.

If it would have come off easily, you would still had to relace it due to the JB weld in it! Just call it a difficult extraction, No errors. Well done. Jim

So, clean up the 2 pieces of the pulley. Mount on nice piece of oak. Place on mantle for furture "around the fire" discussions.

Trophy if you will...................

PS JB Weld or similar is OK to mount it on the oak board!

"Thought" we might have daughter & family here for supper tonight...sooooo...I requested the "special" burgers on the grill. Folks will NOT be here after all, but hope to still do the burgers. Been thinking about that all afternoon and it ALL started with YOUR comment...the salivation, that is!!

Keep up the good work...

Rick

Another victory!

You're not the only one this kind of stuff happens too. I've had in-numerable episodes like this one. It's always the most amazing unexpected things. You just have to find a way to win one way or the other.
Good job!

man..I do miss ground beef. ground turkey is ok.. but lately.. I've been eating alot of vegitable-meat substitute!

yep.. mine said.. 'white, don't bite, brown goes down' IE.. no white bread.. no potatoes.. no starchy starches no regular pasta.. only whole grains and whatnot.. :) no butter.. no margerine.. no bacon.. or any pork at all.. no ground beef, no fatty beef.. mostly chicken, turkey and fish, and leaner beef.. whole grain breads sparingly.. wg pasta or vegi pasta... egg beaters.. surgar free everything including jelly.. low fat peanut butter.. skim / fat free milk.. :) :) :)

well, with that kind of diet, I think I would sooner be dead........my doctor and I have a working agreement that we arrived at a few years back.

he said, "I can help you live to be 90, or you can choose to maybe make it to 70. If you are going to be miserable all the way to 90, it is worth it? You make the choice"

I try to be balanced, and yes, I have cut down on some things, but if you end up miserable, is that the way you want to live a "long" life?

I will probably be the minority here.............

everything you see in those pics is harbor freight.

pullers, hand tools, power tools... well .. ok.. the CHISSLE i used to split it was an old american vermont one,, and the can of pb blaster i got at tractor supply.

I'd say about 75% of my tools are.. and the rest are pre-china craftsman, i've had for 25ys, or others I've gleaned from yard sales and such.

yeah.. :) I should email them those pictures and show them how good their product is.

" Strong enough to make a cast iron pulley hub rip apart during removal before the bond lets go! "

:)

When all this started, I told my doc that I would change my diet and exercise for 3months .. and be hard at it, no cheating.. nothing.. and then recheck to see if it was helping, then another 3 months, etc.. if after about 6 months no numbers were getting better with the new exercise and the 'prisoner of war' diet.. i told them to just save me a room as I was going back to pizza and fried chicken.. :)

as it turne dout.. my blood numbers went back to the normal state in 3 monhts time... so.. i now cheat a lil, but otherwise do some healthy stuff mixed in.

all whole grain breads and stuff.. I will eat cheese 1-2 times a week.. but only skim milk.. no fried foods except for one thing.. nacho chips. every now and then i will have some nacho's.

maybee only ground beef 1/month.. then small serving and super lean.. perhaps in a stuffed pepepr with tomato sauce and brown rice, topped with fat free cheese ( yes.. you can get fat free cheddar, mozzerella and american cheese from kraft now :) )

no fried chicken.. no pork.. etc.

egg beaters, sugar free syrup, whole grain or buckwheat pancakes.. fake sausage if at home.. or some other lean meat if out..

alot of compromises.

funny thing was.. i got home... had a plan on what i would do, in steps, to tackle this.

I had my die grinder set out, angle grinder, sawsall, hand drill and a variety of bits and saw bits.. a selection of tack hammers and mauls..drilling hammer.. etc..
a selection of chissles, penetrant oil, had my torch pulled around and ready... had fine 3/16" mill-style 'nibbler' bits for my die grinder in case I had to just slowly chip away at the hub under the seal area till it let go.. had all that laid out on my cart ready to go.. took me 30 minutes to assemble all the tools and push the cart over and drag the torch cart out... and what happens.. i set down and make 2 cuts witht he die grinder and tap the chissle in .. all of about 5 minutes work and it lets go.. after i assembled all them tools and had a plan on what I would do, in steps, as each thing failed.

hmm.. maybee I intimidated it.. :)

in any case.. I'm glad it's off.

good job Chris.
Don't let this job sour you.
as a fellow Ford guy, I am very impressed
working on these Farmalls (Super H, BN here)
very easy to work on
engine work, just pop the hood (and steering shaft on the H)
drop the oil pan and go. 10 minutes
Not like our Fords with the gas tank in the way (most)
or having to disassemble the tractor to
get the oil pan off(N's)

While you have everything out of the way, you might
want to pop the governor cover off and check its
thrust bearing. They are usually shot.
good luck

ps( picked up these NF Farmalls, because I STILL haven't
found a NF Ford in my low price range. Now I might not need one.
too many $$$ and I am sold on these Farmalls, which are pretty
cheap in my area)

hasn't soured me yet anyway.

just hope I can remember how to put it all back together.

yep. gott he kit for the governor setting on my bench.

got 2 coffee cans full of small parts to remember how to put back on.. :)

darn cheap$$ compaired to a ford trike. cheapes ford trike I got was 1200$ and needed a ton o work. this lil job is still less than 1000$ so far.. and unless i find major problems.. most of the mechanical parts are already ont he way / paid for. that leabes things like paint..e tc. I imagine I can finish her for less than 1200$ all said and done..
