Wood chipper on Farmall Super MTA

Monday I posted a request for information about possible damage to my MTA with live power using a Wallenstein wood chipper. I appreciate all of the responses. Good information. The knives are in excellent shape, so no problem there. Mention was made of a "rubber dampened drive shaft". I have never heard of one. Is it a commercial or after market product, or something that needs to be made? Also, just musing here but I wonder if a stump jumper off a bush hog might dampen the chipper somewhat. All ideas are appreciated. Thanks, Ellis

I would defiinitely want something in between the PTO on My Super M and any "heavy duty"PTO driven implement such as you are talking about!(I have heard that even grain augers were very hard on these PTOs.)

I would hate to have that chipper "jamb up",It could be catasrophic!

How about a "slipper clutch" set up like is on my Bush Hog brand cutter???It has adjustable tension on the disc.

Guessing here.

I use a rubber drive coupler on my chipper as added protection. They are relatively inexpensive and are available in many different configurations based on shaft size and power requirements. I've always used Woods brand couplers, but I know others are available out there. Good luck.
Woods Couplers

If the wood chipper doesn't already have some sort of shear pin or slip clutch arrangement, it's a pretty poor design IMHO.

Forage blowers have shear pins. Haybines, balers, forage harvesters, bush hogs... they all have slip clutches.

Not a problem at all. I thought maybe I could get you pointed in the right direction. I've purchased my Woods couplers through Grainger, but there may be other outlets available to you.

I became aware of Woods after my years in the HVAC field. They are used on a lot of hydronic circulators and fan drives on air handlers.

Good luck!

Don't think a typical Woods three jaw coupler will dampen torsional loads much. A Woods Sure-flex would probably do a better job but they are more expensive. There are a number of flexible elements to choose from.

Most three piece couplers are designed to compensate for radial and angular offsets and not for pulse evening.

I run a Valby 5" chipper off my 504. I have never had any problems. Good chippers are designed to absorb impact loads. It is done at the heavy knife plate (flywheel).

Anyway, Surplus Center has the three-piece three-jaw couplers. They are also in abundance on eBay.

I consider the SMTA PTO as quite robust considering all the rocks I have ground up in my bush hog.

I agree that a 3 jaw coupler would be out of it's elements in this application. Another thing to keep in my is loaded shaft deflection. I know some manufactures publish those values under full load. That might be some additional data that can assure you that the correct type of coupler is used.

One last question. I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but where does it fit? Does it replace a universal joint or go between the universal joint and the sliding shaft? Which end of the drive shaft would be better? The pictures look like the sure flex is made for a round shaft with a key-way. My drive shaft is at the farm so I don't know what size it is yet. The chipper has a shear pin, however I have never had to replace it. You guys are GREAT. Thanks Ellis

my mention of a damened drive shaft included several options (Lovejoy style couplers were not on the list) Mid 1960s Ford drive shafts on automatic transmissioned cars have a rubber torsion damper between two different sized tubes. these could be fabed into a TO shaft for yours at any drive line shop, and obtained for a few bucks at a junk yard. The woods dampener is also a valid solution, as are other similar components. Good luck, Jim

A Woods, Lovejoy or whatever coupler needs to be between two "fixed" shafts, meaning it will not work if one or both ends floats like the pto shaft. Used a lot of several kinds building test machines for Cessna back in the day. Not familiar with your chipper, but if there isn't a shaft like that on your chipper, you will need to fab up some bearing mounted shafts. Woods will take [u:b8fedf8866]a little[/u:b8fedf8866] angular mis-alignment, but not linear without wearing the rubber out... Lovejoy does not handle much of either without wearing the center web. Of course we were running ours faster than 540rpm.
