Farmall B charging system

My Farmall B has no changing system on it right now. I was told the generator was shot when I bought it and it was not on the tractor. It runs great and has the original magneto. I would like to convert it to 12 volt and use an alternator. My questions is can I keep the original mag or does it need to be converted to a coil distributor? Would I be better off just finding a generator and keeping it 6 volts?

Thanks for your thoughts.

YES, you can keep the original Magneto ignition. It has nothing to do with the tractor being 6 or 12 volts, it has no connection to the batetry or charging system as it produces its own energy simply from its rotation and requires no battery at all. On a little B I see no need to butcher it up and convert from 6 to 12 volts, that is if originality means anything to you at all, but its your choice......

You can keep the original magneto.
The magneto has nothing to do with the charging system, and the charging system has nothing to do with the magneto. There is no connection between the two.

6 volts or 12 volts? Advantages & Disadvantages both ways. Your tractor, your choice. Either way can work fine.

This will do it. If magneto, just do not change any thing on that at all, including the switch and kill wire. This diagram, if a mag, If you want a smaller style, use a Hitachi from a 1986 Nissan D21 PU. Jim S terminal is #2 on Delco, L terminal is #1 on Delco Jim

The only problem you may have with 12 volts is that the starter may spin it so fast that the impulse won't catch on the mag. If it fires it may kick back & break the nose off the starter. Use a very small 12 volt battery. I would keep it 6 volt myself.I have a B and super C that we use all winter in central Mn. Both 6 volt.

My 6 volt system has been in place more than 60 years. My philosophy is that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. If it is broke, fix it right and keep it original. They designed these to run on 6 volts, its best to keep them there and devalues your tractor rapidly when modified.

Have Farmall B with magneto. Generator went bad. Put a 6 volt one wire alternator on it and didn't have to change anything on the tractor.
