Farmall Super C timing/distributor problem

Hi experts, am new to forum and working on Farmalls so please be gentle.

Have a 1953 Super C that has a timing problem. I set the timing and the tractor idles and runs great. However, next time tractor is started it"s missing. Re-set timing and all is good for a while then timing is off again. Was told by a tractor mechanic that the distributor could possibly be bad. Is there anything else that should be checked or just go ahead and get a rebuilt distributor?

Check the distributor drive gears; I have been down that same road & found the gears were soo rusty the timing would change just about as soon as I got it set. Not hard to fix.

Two possible issues. The centrifugal advance system (behind the breaker plate) can be rusted up and sticking.
The bushing could be bad allowing the dist cam to move radially If you can see it move when wiggled toward the points and away from them, it is in need of repair. Jim

How long are you leaving it off before you start it again? What happens if you just leave the timing alone, will it eventually clear up? Have you tried to trace the skip, and see if its the same plug each time?

I"ve left it off anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Not sure how to trace the skip as am not a mechanic in any sense of the word. Just try to figure things out as I go which is why you experts are so valuable.
