chipper use

1954 Super MTA with live power. Lately I have been using a direct drive wood chipper with this tractor. There is a lot of hammering and jumping involved with the use of this implement. It is not a smooth operation like using a finish mower. The question- am I causing any damage to the pto by using the chipper? Thanks for your thoughts on this topic. Ellis

It could. If it has a good size flywheel on the shaft the issue is probably not a problem. If there is non, and the chipper wheel is light as well it could tear up drive components. A rubber dampened drive shaft would help. Stay within the guidelines of the chipper. Hardwood is much more difficult to chip, as are dead dry material. Keeping the knives sharp, and adjusted to correct clearance, is also critical. Jim

Jim- I am using a Wallenstein chipper with about a 24" flywheel 3/4 inch thick and 4 knives. It is rated for 4" limbs but I don't put anything that large through it. I was also wondering if there is an easy way to step up the rpm's at the pto shaft. I hope you go back to read this again. Thanks Ellis.

DO not overdrive the RPM, IT WILL BE DANGEROUS TO EVERY PERSON AND DOG WITHIN 1/2 MILE. Sharp blades adjusted by the book will help dramatically. Jim
