Regular update - no miracles yet

Well, I must be having brain cramps. spent a good portion of the day trying to get the H lined up correctly with the REgular to spin her over. Couldn't get the belt to stay on under load, no way, no how. I was by myself, so that didn't help matters on the "line up" either. As long as I didn't have her in gear, the belt ran fine. As soon as I would feather the clutch out with the belt pulley engaged, she'd run off to the side and off the pulley's.

So........................

I pulled a set of 13.6 x 28 tires out of my tire pile. Wire brushed a set of F&H round spokes I have, mounted the tires and put rubber on the old girl for now. Next sunny day, the F150 is going to pull her around a few laps in the large parking lot of the trucking company next to me.

She still is ocasionally poppin' here and there, but just seems she wants to be turnin' a bit faster to run. I may put a F4 mag on her that I know is good. I got good spark on the bench out of the E4A, but who knows. I'll "borrow" an F4 mag off one of my running tractors to see if that makes a difference.

I contemplated belting up an AC WC we were trying to start to a Case SC a couple years ago.
Ended up pulling with a 20' chain, keeping the WC in 4th gear, and this worked great. This was my first experience pull starting a tractor.
BTW, any connection to Oconomowoc WI. ?

I have used a belt in the past to start engines. First time I went to start the WC, one of the rusted rims gave up and fell off. Jacked it up and tryied using a JD 520, but the bearing in the pulley was going out so you couldn't get it tight enough and get it out of gear. Had to get the 8N ford and a come-along to winch the 520 backwards so I could get the tension I needed to get the belt turning. You do have to get them lined up nice and square and get some tension on the belts to use them. Pulleys have a crown so once everything is in place and tight the crown helps keep the belt traking to the center of the pulley.

Cowman, good advice. I had a bit of droop in it because I had to cross the belt to get the right rotation. I'll try it again with some good tention on it. I would prefer to use the belt as I can then adjust things to get her "purring". With no load, the belt tracked just fine.

Hard to do when you pull start them. I'll try again, and report back.

I "aim" the outside edge of the "Driving" pulley with the inside edge of the "Driven" pulley and as Cowman said "Get it tight"

When I restore my tractors, either it be a regular, f30, or f-12, I first pull the spark plugs, squirt in some oil, short the plug wires to the block and then belt up and run the engine for 10-15 minutes. I watch oil pressure, to make sure its up there. This way I pre-break in the engine without it under load.

After it is nice and free, I then install the plugs, add gas, and crank it over. Generally, they start right off.

IN my opinion, the E4A is a hotter spark than the F4. Either Mag is a great mag when they are in good working condiditon and set-up right. Take some old plugs, gap them out to 1/8", and test the spark jump. If they all fire, then the mag has enough power.

Make sure the mag is timed right. I set the advance in the middle, and adjust the mag coupler so the the mag fires (under the impusle trip) when the piston is just past top dead center. The engine starts easier, and I never have a kickback.

Good Luck!
