steering knob

hey guy's whats a good clock position for a suicide/steering knob on a tractor steering wheel used mostly for log skidding and plowing snow with a front mount plow?

Top center is not good because if the tractor stops suddenly it becomes a chest spear. I like them at 3 o'clock. It is personal preference. I would not put it where I normally hold the wheel with my hands it will get in the road of "normal". Jim

That may well turn out to be a trial & error sort of deal based on what feels comfortable/right for YOU.

On my '63 4000 Ford, I have a knob at about the 7 O'clock position. This tractor has power steering and cuts/turns "cat quick" when I use the knob.

Be safe...Rick

Hi I have mine at 3 o clock also. I use it all the time, and believe it has cut about 15 minutes off of my mower time. Dave K.

I install all of mine at the 7:00 or 8:00 position. I am right handed, most tractors are set up for a right handed person, and installing the knob to be used with your left hand will leave your right hand free to operate the throttle, hydraulic controls, shift lever, etc.

You didn't mention WHAT tractor you intend to install it on.... but if it's new enough to have full hydrostatics power steering, where you mount the $&#^ finger-busting thing is immaterial, 'cause the position of the steering wheel slowly "drifts" in relation to front wheel wheel position with those systems.

wow Bob your right, its a 300U with hydro steering upgrade and your right about the changing steering wheel position. so i guess i will throw it anywhere and live with it, haa, haa. hey thanks for all the good input fellas..

I put mine at 9or 10 oclock. That way Ican steer with my left and work throttle and hydralics with my right

Mike, You didn't say what tractor it is, or whether it is a gear drive or Hydrolic steering system! My IH 966 has a Hydrolic driven system, So the position Never is the same for the steering wheel spin will give up position right and left during the coarse of a day. But since your ? is about the position of the steering Knob, if all things are equal on a 3 spoke wheel....12:00 Straight up.
Later,
John A.
