Farmall M problem

I have been using my 1946 M to haul next winters firewood home. The problem is that the M idles fine when cold, but after huling the wood trailer the eight miles to the woods it won't idle.It runs about half throttle . If you turn the key off for a second, to get it to idle down it jumps right back up when you turn the key back on.
Would this be a govenor issue or something else? Any help would be appreciated. Kent

If it stays running at a fast when the lever is moved to idle (forward) the following questions will help us diagnose the issue.
When you are operating it when first started, does the governor work to keep the engine speed steady, or is unresponsive, requiring easing into things so it doesn't die?
Does the throttle position above the fast idle seem to work OK, In other words does it go to full throttle as it should?
Has the carb been worked on, give us the history of this problem, or your history with the tractor.
The start stop switch will not affect the position of the idle system, there is no electrical connection to the carburetor, Jim

Jim: It idles smoothly when the engine is cold. It runs smoothly when hot, but at a lot higher RPM. When you let the clutch out in 1st thru 3rd no problems. When you let the clutch out in 4th and 5th you have to be careful or it'll stall.
My neighbour (an retired IH macanic) just repaired the distributor, cleaned the carb, new pooints and plugs. Thanks Kent

Did you own or operate this tractor before this situation happened? And or did it happen just after it was worked on? The situation seems to me to be the governor hook up at the carb to governor flange. There is a tan and slot in that location that is difficult to get into place. If there seems to be poor or unpredictable control of the throttle )speed of the engine)with the handle in front of the steering wheel I suspect the tan and tab.
Do not drive the tractor until this is fixed, overspeeding and ruined engine (or wreck) can happen. Jim

I had a very similar problem on a 450LP that I bought recently (went nuts this year bringing stuff home).

Turned out there was binding in the governor linkage. Also one of the governor weights has a bushing that is shot. With the linkage tweaked back to normal it will return to a low idle as it should.
