I don't have a Cub, but I believe the Cub and virtually all post war Farmall and other IH tractors up to ?? had the rubber knob.
 
My '57 Loboy has a metal shield. The parts manual TC-37 shows this shield on both the Loboy and the Cub. No reference to a rubber boot but there is a rubber knob.
 
I agree with the others above about the metal collar, I thought you meant the knob at the top.
 
Back in the 60's International Harvester sold as an accersory a rubber boot that fit over the steel shield on cub's thru 560 gear shifts.
 
Should just be a little metal "dome" at the bottom of the shift. No boot.

Just one more reason to keep your tractor sheltered.
