400 hydraulic valve body

What do the adjustments on top of the hydraulic valve bodies on a 400 do. Just cleaned mine up and saw these adjustments and did noy know what they do. thanks for any help.
 
They turn all the way either to S for single acting or D for double acting. The levers then supply oil for single acting or double acting cylinders. (one hose or two). The roll pins are not terribly robust, and the tin covers are also kinda flimsy. Be gentle if turning them. Never leave them part way, the system will go to full pressure, and be very hot. Jim
