jrsutton super A steering box

Mr. Sutton I read with interest your comments on a previous post about super A steering box and decided to start a new post because you were accused of hi-jacking the former post. With that said I was appreciative of your advice and depth about rebuilding the steering box. When I had asked before on a previous post no one tackled it with much detail. I have a 53 that is tight and a 50 that the front wheels wobble side to side when going down the road. You mentioned a kit in your previous post and I want to ask you where you got it and how expensive it was. Thanks....Fred

I would not worry about a kit just remove the steering sector from the tractor so you can do a complete teardown and get parts from your dealer or any shop that sells seals and bushings and bearings. Last one i did was around 50 for all the parts but i did make my own gaskets.

It was actually somebody else accused of hijacking the thread. Not that it's such a horrible crime that I wouldn't want to be acccused of it, but still like to set the record straight.

Anyway - I got my "kit" through Steiner. You can get all the parts individually yourself, but I thought the price was fair enough, to avoid measuring everything and cutting a gasket. I'll add the link.

But as for your wheels that wobble - is there play in the steering wheel? How far can you turn the wheel back and fort before the steering arm moves?

If it's anything less than about 1/4 turn, I'm not sure I'd recommend rebuilding the steering box.

Either way, definitely check everything outside the steering box before jumping in.

One thing that was never mention in the last post was the front wheel bearings. Make sure those are tight and intact.

I had a lot of wobble in the wheels myself - but I think most of that was due to the crack in the pivot point on the front axle. Not sure if that's ocmmon or not, but I'd definitely check it closely. Mine wasn't as obvious as you might think.

Good luck - if I can post any more pictures that might help, just let me know.

rebuilt steering box for 100. top bearing was shot. friend says that oil does not reach bearing so it wears out. must be some way to get oil to the bearing.

In addition to the little oil filler hole, there should be a grease fitting right over that bearing, right on top of the steering box.

The grease should be thick enough to stay in place on the bearing. (this is on the early model super A, so not sure if things changed over time to the 100).

Either way - the kit I got had a sealed bearing, so it's really a moot point. Perhaps that's why they chose a sealed bearing for the kit.

And I'm referring to the ball bearing at the top of the sector gear shaft - assuming that's the one you mean. The top bronze bushing on the steering shaft may be a different story. But I believe that should be in contact with gear oil if you fill the steering box.
