350 Farmall PTO will not shut off

What manual do i need to find out why my PTO does not shut off when the lever is in the off, or can you explain what i should do? I have a 350 farmall tractor.

Would check band adjustment first. IT manual that covers the tractor or a IH blue ribbon manual for the planetary PTO.

The bands that stop the output shaft are not adjusted correctly, or the lever and linkage that control the band are worn or have lost motion, or the band is worn out and cannot be adjusted, or the Drive band is adjusted so tight that the unit is on all the time, and has burnt off the brake band.
If you can rotate the PTO with the tractor OFF with a pipe wrench on the shaft, with it in Stop (locked forward with the push button on the stick) the first place to look is the linkage. lost motion is common in the pivot, and in the link to the actuator on the side of the unit.
If it rotates, the drive is not in the ON condition that would power an implement.
Adjustment can be found in the archives -- 300 PTO Jim

The linkage on well used PTOs on the utility series become dysfunctional after years of use.
Two suggestions:
Make very sure there is no lost motion in the hand lever pivot and rod mechanism. Be certain the hand lever moves the PTO lever from the middle both ways.
Adjust it like this, after there is no play in links.
Move the lever exactly half way between the locked on position and locked off position (little flipper catch on lever.
Take off the little dome metal cover from the adjust screws.
Loosen the jamb nut, and tighten the front (away from you) screw until it is just a bit tighter than the point at which it begins to feel tighter as it is screwed in (maybe a eighth turn) then back it off until the PTO shaft will turn with least drag (about 3/4 turn out) and tighten the lock nut while holding the adjuster.
Do the same for the closer adjuster.
If the screws go into the jamb nuts and get flush with the top surface of the nut, the bands are probably worn out, and may be operational for a while, but plan on a rebuild.
Now (tractor off) push the the lever down toward the brake footplate. As it goes down, it should get harder to push when it is about 4" (or so) away from fully OFF. and be noticeably harder to push for the last inch, but not real hard. (this is the brake band tightening on the drum in the PTO unit.
Then pull it up and do the same feel.
The ON position should feel the same way.
The shaft should turn pretty free when the lever is half way, and not at all when in either ON, or OFF. (tractor shut off)
If it slips now, it needs a rebuild. JimN

OK I just got done.... I'm guessing the stop band is shot... the front adjusting screw in or out does not change anything lever on middle or pushed ahead in the stopped spot ... I still can turn shaft with wrench and turn the motor over.
Now the screw away from the tractor. With the lever in the middle, if you turn the shaft it still turns the motor over. if you put the lever in the on location the shaft will stop when using the wrench.... so what should I do next?
I tryed to locate 300 PTO info can you give me a date? Thanks for your help... I would like to crab alittle about this perfect tractor but it will not help anything... Thanks again JimmyW

Back off both screws until the bands are loose. It the shaft still turns the engine the planetary gears are smoked. Most likely run low on oil and fuse together. Time for a different PTO assembly.

I think from the diagnosis so far, that Owen has it. The rear (ON) band is supposed to stop the ring gear of the planetaries, making the PTO turn with the engine, but at 540 RPM. It is stopping it, but it is also stopping everything. The fact that it will turn the engine when in the off position is also a symptom of this issue. This means the Gears in the planetary reduction unit are broken or jammed.
To tell for sure with no further investment in the unit, Check the RPM with it running wide open, If it is between 540 and about 650, the gears are working. If it is more like 800 or 900 or more, the gears are trash. Do not run it with the lever in the on position if this is the case. Overheating of the rear band will destroy even more parts. Jim

Here's where I'm at.... I pulled it apart and found that one of the planetary gears is stuck, where the pin has overheated and there's metal shavings in the casing. I know that this means it's shot... :( Any good recommendations as to where I can locate a replacement live PTO box at a reasonable price. I'm concerned I'll pay premium and then still not having a working PTO. Thanks for all your help on this. You were right on the money. Jim

Your location may help because of weight and shipping costs. Could probably fix you up, but probably to far away.

Get a hold of Frank Webber, he is in Iowa, he may have one. Also, Burgh equipment will have one, but you have the shipping cost from Pa.
