my question is should the head lights when checked with a test light have power on them when the switch is off and also should the rear light terminal number 2 on the light switch be hot all the time so it can be turned on at the rear light.THANKS

(quoted from post at 13:24:22 10/18/11) my question is should the head lights when checked with a test light have power on them when the switch is off and also should the rear light terminal number 2 on the light switch be hot all the time so it can be turned on at the rear light.THANKS

There should be NO power to any of the lights when the switch is in the off position.

Right, the hot leg should always be the switch-leg. I found on mine that the return leg, through the steel frame, has to be clear of all the rust and etc. It needs to be a good ground. I finally ran a separate green ground wire from the light-bulb socket out a hole in the light fixture, to a good solid part of the steel frame. Lights are bright.

So , George your telling me there should be power to the lights even if the switch is in the off position . My tractor is still 6 volt and still has a generator and is positive ground . THANKS

Nope, I didn't say it clearly. Another way I could have said it would be, that leg is not hot until it is switched on. Only then is it hot.
In other words, it is not hot until it is switched on.
Same for all lights in yourhouse, in fact for all circuits. It is a safety feature, so you don't getinto a hot circuit accidentally, with the switch in the OFF position.

George , I wired the switch like the factory diagram shows I was also checking the light wire with the test light lead on the starter button ground and not the positive ground if this makes any difference I may have to go back check the wiring in the switch.
