H Steering shaft

Just a question, I plan on replacing the steering shaft universal on my 41 H, noticed where the steering shaft goes through the center support (gauge mount) there's a lot of play, haven't removed yet, so not sure what's worn, just wondering if there was a bushing in this area ? Would need a hole to aling with the grease fitting. Thanks, AL

Yes, there is a bushing in there, and yes, it is worn out. The hole for the grease can be drilled AFTER the new bushing is installed. Just remove the grease zerk and have at it. The sad part is that the shaft is also worn, and will need to be built up and turned down, and then the new bushing needs to be reamed to fit the shaft.

Al: I have the cast iron bushing with the tapped hole for the grease fitting. It appears to be perfect. I bought it several years ago at a show because I thought it would fit an M but it was for an H. If you want it you pay the shipping. No charge for the part. I'm sure the steering shaft is worn also. I have found that if you wrap a piece of leather around the steering shaft on each side of the bushing and secure it with a hose clamp the grease stays in better. Ellis Kinney

Farmall 300 or 350, $10.00 bushing will work. You would need to bore the old support to install the bushing. Connecting rod bushing from a C175 engine works also. Think you can still get a new center casting at CIH for around $75.
Like the others pointed out the shaft may be worn as much or more than the bushing.
If you decide to have the steering shaft built up it can be made oversize where the center support is then bore support to fit. Can't go any bigger than the shaft size at the front bushing and seal though.
