Safety Warning

I asked my wife to hold the side of the 3-point hitch steady as I lowered it into the pick-up bed. Used the other front-end loader. I was going to the carwash with it.
I lowered the 3-point as she carefully held the lower arm, and the thing suddenly collapsed, folded up, and she just stepped aside. No damage, she had all her fingers. Scared the pee-wadden out of me.
I said Honey, if I EVER ask you to do that again, don't do it. Use a LONG push stick, and stand way off to one side.
Warning, guys, for your wives and kids.

It is important to always be ready to jump out of the way and never try to catch a steel piece. It can take limbs off just like a scissors.

A fellow once told me when working around machinery always expect the unexpected. I have found this to be very true.

I try (because the inexperienced students I work around, probably 2/3, have not had any working relationship to heavy objects) to tie things such that they cannot fold or unfold, or slide on the chain fall when moved. The trying is all one can do. They will stick their fingers in holes, rest on the back of machines, and cut off chunks that fall on their feet. With two of us working with 18 to 20, it is a continuous challenge. I have lost no digits or body parts, nor have any of my students, but I am lucky.
I am glad your wife is OK and was observant (and quick enough) to avoid the danger. Whew Jim

Let her keep helping. Working around heavy iron is a learned trait. It can't be taught. You learn what not to do by getting hurt. Your warning about using a stick is a good one.

I treat the heavy stuff the same way as driving around this city.

ALWAYS leave yourself and out. A route to get out quickly and a reasonably safe place to dump off if needed.

Sounds like she got lucky and you had both learned a valuable lesson. Fortunately without the injury or loss of limb.

It's always a good point to bring home too ... don't hurry and work safely.
