H axle seals

No,I dont believe so.As long as the axle bearings are good and the sealing surface of the axle is not damaged.

If you do have to pull them out,it isnt that difficult to do.I am sure there are many on here who have ACTUALLY done it.(Reading about it,it doesnt have too many parts to deal with.)I am sure someone will "chime in " on this to give you some of the details.

You are talking about the rear axle seals,NOT the brake pinion seals?

No, just pull the centers and tires. Clean the axles shaft REALLY well before and after pulling the centers. That will make it easier to slide the centers off and slide the new seal on without scoring it.

I have to do both.

The cover gasket is leaking, the axles seals leak and the brakes don't work too well. I would like to pull the cover fix the brakes, replace the cover then work on the axle seals.

changing the bull pionion seals is far more complex then changing the axle seals. There are a couple of ways to do it but the 'correct' way is to remove the top cover or the pto to gain acess to the bull grears, remove the bolts on the axle ends and pull the axles out. ( you can do the seals on them now as well) There are 4 bolts that hold the bearing cage in there. With these removed you will be able to pull the bearing cage out and change the seal. I would really get a manual before you get into that job. Not a super hard job but not a walk in the park.
The other way to do it is to try and pick and pry the seal out with hooks and such, i have never done them this way just have heard it talked about. Im sure there are lots of post in the archives on here about this, the M is pretty much the same set up as well you can reference them as well. Supers and beyond are diffrent.

Don't forget the third way, pulling the PTO and unbolting the bull gears while somebody turns the axles. I can't imagine trying to lift and line the bull gear up through the tiny PTO hole, but a lot of guy have done it.

That method would work, but it is foolish. If you are going to do a good job you will replace the seals between the big main part and the two axle housing things. To do this you need to remove the axles...to do that you need to remove the axle seal retainers...Know what I mean?
