Differential lock for 1066

(quoted from post at 17:21:54 10/12/11) Did the 1066 ever have a differential lock? How hard is it to put one in if I can find one somewhere?

To install the differential lock you would need to replace both bull pinion gears. You will need the differential lock shaft, the right brake cover and the differential clutch, lock assembly cover, associated oil lines and fittings and the control valve.

When you are all done you will have a differential lock assembly that makes very little difference and most likely will leak oil.

If you really need a differential lock you would be better off converting the brake system to the 86 series type. Since you already have to replace the bull pinion gears you may as well use gears for the 1086 along with the '86 series brake and differential lock assemblies. You would need to replace the 9 GPM MCV pump with a 12 GPM pump and change the orifice to go from 3 GPM to 5 GPM. You would also need to add the brake lube line. With the 86 series assemblies you would actually have a system that works and doesn't leak oil.

Save yourself the money. Dad got one on our 1066, & it is worthless. Works on clutches & doesn't lock up at all--never did. IH engineers could have done better here.

Dad's 1066 came with a diff lock. They should have called it a diff suggestion, not a diff lock. He's spent a lot of time with his heel on that button next to the seat, and never really thought it did much of anything.

The diff lock on the 5220 Maxxum works, but all it's good for is digging two holes when you get stuck instead of one.

Thanks for the info. I guess I won't be looking for one. My deere has a diff lock and it works well. Thought maybe the IH would do better with one as well.
