IH 585 opinion

I have just acquired a used IH 585 tractor{ Y.O.M around 1990] and i plan to use it for plowing. This is a new machine to me and i am not sure whether its a good tractor. It runs great,all system are working just fine. and i am going to test it this weekend with a 3 disc plow.

Anything i need to look up for. Iam a kenyan living in Nairobi city. Not many of these tractors around compared to ford,newholland and massey fergusson.
 
should be a good tractor. The tractor was built with different options depending on where it was intended to be sold globally, so make sure you have the right operator's manual and any supplemental pamphlets. Also, IH made an ?85 series for the non-American market in the 1980s before CaseIH existed--which tractor brand do you really have? They are 90% the same tractor, but there are some minor part differences, mainly hydraulic systems.
Basically become familiar with the controls and the how to use them (read your manual). Use high quality fuel and lubricants. follow maintenance procedures. The tractor was designed to compete with Massey-Ferguson and Ford, so it should work as good as anything you're accustomed to, and should work with the same implements.

Hi Joseph, good tractor in 50 to 60 HP range.
Weak point is Operator forgets to release parking brake and chews up parking brake band in transmission clogging hydraulic valves.

Engine is very good if proper maintenance is done.
Oil, filters, etc.

thank you guys for the info. I feel more assured that i have the correct machine. i know know the things to look out for.

Since i bought it from another farmer herein Kenya i do not have enough details of its origin but i guess it was imported new by a local dealer who have since closed shop.

I have serviced it .. oil,filters,hydraulic oil etc and hope it will hit the ground running.
