Farmall H Brakes

I have new bands, new brake actuators (the things the bands attach too) and these things are not working at all. When they are installed they do not grap at all when peddle is presed down fully. I have tried adjusting but it seems to be locked on or nothing at all.

I am getting diagrams from the deal and hoping to make progress. Please let me know of any asssitance. Have looked in past forums but nothing about adjusting and installation.

On the bottom of the brake pan(cover) is a set screw that needs to be set, this pushes up on the band so that the entire surface of the band contacts the drum, otherwise only a small portion of the band contacts.

There are simple tests to attempt. If the right hand actuator was put on the left side, or the correct one was put on upside dowm, it will not work. If the bands are longer (center of rod hole to center of rod hole when compared to the old ones it will not (probably) work.
The spring links would need to be lengthened from a worn band, so something is wrong in the assembly or length of band. The screw on the bottom holds up the band to prevent it from draging when the brake is off. Screw it in till it has contact, and loosen one half turn (experience). Jim

The levers (triangles welded to shaft) are made specific to right & left, cant recall exactly but believe it was the position of the keyway, anyway compare the 2 against each other, see if anything obvious to determine which is correct for its own side. Hope this helps.

Michael, I have to respectfully disagree with you. The adjusting screw on the bottom of the brake cover has nothing to do with the brake adjustment. It is there to keep the brake lining from rubbing on the top of the brake hub when not engaged. you adjust it up just enough to take the "sag" out of the brake band so it doesn't rub.
