Is it OK to tow a non-running 966 about 8 miles? Is there a tow procedure/setting for the transmission?

Add 5 more gallons of Hytran to lube the gears. Then you can safly tow without potential gear damage.Steve

How will you deal with no brakes and no steering?

We have a 756, an 856, and a 1066. None of them have useful brakes or steering without engine power. The brakes work a little bit if you pump the heck out of them. The steering you need a 48" pipe wrench to turn.

Neighbor has made a HEAVY "A"-frame hitch the clamps to the front axle to drag tractors to his shop using a tractor to pull them, so steering and brakes aren't an issue.

I am well aware what happens when a NewGen Deere is towed without the tranny in "tow" but have never dealt with towing a Binder and was wondering if there were any precautions for towing the red beast.

I think Delta's suggesting of an extra bucket of Hy-Tran is a good one.

mkirsch! The steering will be hard but not as hard as you say. As for the brakes you should be able to slide the wheels with little effert. If you cannot slide the wheels then you need to fix your brakes. All the IH with dydraulic brakes should have good brakes with engine.

What DeltaRed said about adding extra Hytran fluid comes from the Operator's Manual. It is for non-running tractors only. If engine can be run, it must be to provide transmission lubrication . Put in neutral and have second operator to steer and brake towed tractor at not over 20 mph
