Farmall AI Industrial: Which method to check oil......

Doing homework on my Farmall A Industrial today. Talked to a fellow who told me something I did not know. He said the real industrial engines had dip-sticks for checking engine oil and that the Ag or Non-Industrial A engines had petcocks for that purpose located in the side of the oil pan. My 1946 Farmall A Industrial has the petcocks. So does that really mean my tractor has had the Industrial engine replaced with an Ag engine??

Dennis

DENNIS...I have a 46 A (industrial) and it has the petcocks. What you were told "may" have happened at some time, but I know the history of my A and it has had petcocks.

Dad bought the A...about l956/57...as a "surplus" tractor from the NC Highway Dept. It had petcock system then, so if any changes were made, that would have been done prior to 1956/57.

Tell that fellow to find you a tractor thats like what he described. The tractors had the petcocks and the power units had the dipstick. Come over i have some to show him just ask him where his are. Most power units have the starter coming in from the front under the filter housing

The Farmall A, industrial or agricultural, would have to shift the oil pressure gauge to use the dipstick. The dipstick pad on the block is just behind the oil filter and I do not think that the dipstick would clear the gauge as you tried to withdraw the dipstick.

This is good; thanks for the comments. This fellow had two A's there; both needed a lot of work. One did have a dipstick.....right side, way back toward the end of the block.

So from what you say, could his with the dipstick have had a stationary power plant block installed? (If that's the proper way I understood your comment.)

I certainly feel better about mine. (Which has a water in the head and pan problem and is next Spring's project)

Does his block have a void half round place behind the filter where the block bolts to the bell housing. That void is where the starter bolted to on the power plant engines called U-2 by IH Ihave three of those engines one came in an A the other is in a Fork truck built by a place in Minn. The other engine came off a 55W baler in Colo. All three have the plate for the hy pump and the dipstick and place for the starter and oil guage moved as other post says. Do you need any more info on the engine.

Gene B: Interesting and thank you. I'll be seeing this fellow sometime in the next few days because I need to buy a couple things from him. If I have my wits about me I'll take my camera and photograph the block of his, "Industrial," tractor. (BTW, both of this tractors have the industrial heavy front axle)

All this is good for me because I'm learning things, which I like.

Dennis

First, your tractor is a International A rather than a Farmall A. Both the International A and The Farmall A have the petcocks. The only engine with a dip stick would be an engine from a power unit or possably a parts department replacement engine.

what is your engine number i have a 46 model and have no clue if it is a farmall a or an international a because i ground off the red paint to find yellow paint and then the original primer my serial number is 151 483 made in chicago
