Help...I went to crank my M this weekend and when I put fuel in the tank, gas came pouring out of the top hole of carb on the end next to choke. However, I was able to crank it up and it ran. Is this an indication the float is stuck or is it something else? I'm new to these type of carbs and tractors so any help is appreciated.

Could be one of a few things. Float stuck or bad, or dirt/rust in the needle seat. Some times tapping on the carb will free up a sticking float. And if you pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and let gas flow for a few minutes some times that will clean out dirt/rust in the seat. Catch the gas so as to look at it for dirt/rust and water. Water can/will make a float stick due to rust built up on the float pin is it is steel

Old is exactly right. These are gravity feed carbs so every minor malfunciton with the floats, needle and seat are clearly visible to the eye - and ground. A stuck float on a system with a fuel pump does not show itself visibly nearly so often, since gravity is not allowing fuel to pour through the carb.

That said, ususally when you get them started and drive them a little, the bouncing around and vibration of the engine corrects the malfunction and they are fine - until next time it happens. For that reason, I don't run my carbs out of gas. I do shut off the fuel valve, however. Why? Because just about every time I run them out of gas, the float sticks at the bottom of the bowl and they are pouring gas when I open the fuel valve. Now, if I were going to park the tractor for a couple of months, I'd run the carb dry and deal with the stuck float when I restart them. But, I run my tractors more frequently than that and I've found I have less stuck float issues by not running the carbs dry.

Puttng my H back together, I just stuck the carb back together, and it flooded bad. I took it apart again, and I had positioned the float so it caught against the side of the float chamber. I bent it / moved it slightlty, and it's fixed.

Thanks again for all of the information guys. I drained the carb and gas isn't leaking out now. It looked like there were small pieces of rust/trash in there.
