Junk 1939 Farmall A

I have a Farmall A that has a load bearing noise in the trans when it moves or when the PTO is kicked in. Anyway, a friend has a Farmall A that he was going to scrap and wanted to know if I needed any parts. After talking to him we ageed that I would take his A, use the parts that I need. Take any hard parts that I may need when I replace the bearings in my trans, Then junk the tractor and give him the money. Sounds good until he told me on the phone a few days later that the tractor is a 1939 model. His 1939 A is not a busted up tractor but has an engine that would cost more to fix than the tractor would be worth, much less spend money on paint, and etc. Does the fact that his Farmall A was a first year tractor make a difference? If so I will not junk it.

Year pretty much does not matter BUT NO tractor is worth taking to the scrapper. Last fall I built my BA. Half B half A forward of the transmission it is B back it is an A. Used parts from 2 Bs and one A to build it and have very little $$ in it and did it all old school as in NO new parts and it cut most of my hay this year. So as I said is it worth saving I say hands down YES IF NOT H-E double hockey sticks SAVE IT

Well, it depends upon how early the '39 is. do you know the serial number? I have a 4 digit '39 that I totally dismantled, and I will put it back together as my next project. I know the Duetz fastener parts are worth $$$. I don't even want to tell you what I paid for my Duetz all fuel hood, rad, and grill........

IF your wallet can stand it, and you want another project, I would restore it. However, it is a person preference thing, and it all depends upon what you want to do.

What tractor could I do major engine work on and have less in it than it is worth!?! I don't think you could even say that is true for a SMDTA. Heck, my friend has a 4010 in the shop getting rebuilt right now and that engine job is going to cost over $8000 and the tractor MIGHT be worth $10,000.

don't scrap it. worth something to someboby. I went all the way to oregon from nebraska for a cub once. cute lil sh#t. nice vaction too.

I here you guys. I have a Super A and I just wanted some parts off of his. For example, His air filter assemble is not dented and mine is. My rear rims are well used and his are in good shape. etc. If I need any hard parts in the trans/rearend when I put new bearings in it I will get it from his. He was going to scrape it. I am going to take what I need and put my old parts on his. If the tractor or sheet metal is sought after then it can go a different way other than the scrapper. It's his tractor but after I get done with it if it will go to another person that can use it I'm sure he would rather sell it cheap to them instead of the junk yard. I will try to get the serial number off of it later this week.

(quoted from post at 17:03:40 10/10/11) were are you located? If somewhat close maybe we could work something out and id save it.

Northeast Mo.. It will be awhile before I am done with it. The parts that I need are parts that are in better shape than what's on my tractor. The parts that are on my tractor are not that bad, just superfical dents, well used rims (but good rims, just not prefect),etc. I don't need the sheet metal, fenders, tank, engine parts, block, etc. The tie-rods on my A are bent alittle. I may want to swap out the tie-rods since his are straight. I think I have given a good idea of what I am going to do. If anyone thinks that the tractor is better off in a collectors yard instead of a junk yard, I will post pictures of it before I remove parts and after I remove parts.
