H Steering Problem

The center bearing (part #8097-D) on my 51H is worn and the shaft vibrates all the time. The shaft does not appear to be worn although I have not dismantled it yet. Does this bearing have a bushing in it? If so, what size is it? If not, does anyone know where I can get a bearing that is not worn?

Also, there is play between the steering worm and the sector gear. I can't see how to get it out to tighten up the steering other than by replacing either one or both of the gears. Any tricks you guys have used to solve this problem?

Thanks for the help.

Best thing to do would be to drop your entire front bolster shaft and replace everything. Carter and Gruenwald sells a complete upper bolster bushing kit...I think it is $185 but gives you everything you need and is really the only way to tighten your steering back up to stop the wobble. Might not have as much play in the steering gear once all the bushings are replaced on the bolster shaft...there is also a bearing on the steering shaft where it comes in to the gear housing. New sector gears for H's can be found; last one I saw was like $90 I think.

If your main concern is the front end wobble, alot of guys will run more pressure in one tire that the other (like 40 and 20PSI or something) and it seems to work pretty good.

The center steering wheel shaft (8097D)bearing can be replaced if it is not available at the dealer, it can be rebushed inexpensively.
The top bushing in the front bolster shaft (43805DR), the Worm bushing (41096DBR), and Worm seal (359042R91) can all be replaced to reduce the worm gear to Sector backlash. Beyond those, new sector or worm, or both are needed. Mobil 1 synthetic chassis grease is good for the box, and does not leak out, Jim

My 51H did not have a bushing in the center bracket only at the top by the steering wheel was there a bushing. Dealer parts man also said no bushing in middle.
Anyone with a lathe and mill could bore that and put a bushing in. Mine was not bad, I welded up the shaft and turned it down in a lathe.
