D-239 block/coolant heater?

Have a 664 with D-239 engine. Would like to add a block/coolant heater for these cold morning starts.

A D-239 is not a glow plug engine and it can be hateful to start as the temps. fall.
Thinking of trying a lower radiator hose heater. Would this be a good choice or is there a better solution short of a heated building.

Also, with this being a 12 volt conversions should I be able to go back to one good large capacity cranking battery? The cables also need a good going over for corrosion and bad connections.

Currently, the former owner had 2 all but dead 12v batteries in parallel.Without glow plus only draw is the starter. Would a single battery be adequate?

As always any and all comments or opinions are
welcome
thanks

Have put a few heaters in lower hose and they worked fine, have not seen a block heater for the 239 engine.

Hi Bmd, yes a tank heater is easily installed on a D-239. Depending on how cold it gets in your area whether a tank heater is required or an in-line lower rad hose heater will work.

Do you realize the 664 has an advance on the pump for cold-weather starting? Set throttle about half open or a little more and pull the fuel shut-off about half way. Acts like a choke on a gas engine. Below 35 degrees youwill want a coolant heater. I put a TS tank heater on my 664 -works well.

Thanks for the cold start info. That plus a tank heater should do the trick.
But first up is replacement batteries since both are on there last leg.

Since the 664 is a 12v system do you use 2 12volt batteries in parallel or a single battery in your 664 currently? From the parts diagrams it looks like the original batteries were 2 6volts connected in series. This tractor had been converted to 2 12V batteries in parallel. Would be nice(cheaper) to go back to one good 12v battery if it would do the job on a cold day.

thanks for the info

It depends on how cold it gets, do you live in Texas or Tacoma, it will start easier if it gets below freezing with a block heater, if its used daily I would stick with the 2 6 volt battery, you have more reserve amps & voltage.
