49 Farmall C trans. problems

I found two bolts lying on the bottom of the transmission housing frame when I drained the oil. I believe they are from the differential gear casing. I thought I would be able to access the internals by removing the belt pully and power takeoff attachments. I got the belt pulley housing off and was able to remove the power takeoff drive rod and the shifter tube. But, I cannot get the power takeoff housing to come completely off the trans. housing. Something is holding it in place. I don't want to force it (since I don't know what I'm doing!). The question is: how is the power takeoff housing removed? The next question is: After I get it off will I have sufficient access to the trans. internals, or do I have to remove the top cover of the trans.?

I don't know about the internal access but before you manhandle that PTO assembly, be sure you have all the bolts out of it, I think there are 7. The one commonly missed is dead center at the bottom. With all the bolts out, there are two locating dowels still holding on probably. Carefully and evenly pry the housing away from the rear end.

dej(Jed): As to what I plan to do? Replace the bolts. See my initial post.
Curt: Yes, there were 7 bolts & all of them have been removed.
Wayne: Yes, it would be easier to work on, if I could get the cover off. But, how do I do that when it refuses to come off completely? I've removed the belt pulley drive housing but I can't get the power takeoff housing to come off. What could be holding it in place? Is there a woodruff key that is holding somewhere that I have to overcome? Maybe I'm just scared to put too much leverage on it since I don't know what is holding it.
