starter removal

I own a 1950 Farmall MD. The starter has to be rebuilt. I can't manuaver to get it out. If anyone can help me with some info about my dilema. I can't believe that replacing the starter would involve major tractor disassembly. Please feel free to offer suggestions. Thankyou.

There are two possible solutions. Take the starter apart where it is and remove the endplate and drive housing within the existing space (my way)
remove (or at least partially remove) the Belt pulley drive. With it moved some the starter will come out whole. Painfull it is. Jim

It comes out, not sure how to tell you how it does, pulled it out on my Super MD. Just a lot of trial and error till it falls out. I also did it with the Belt pulley in as well. Just give it time.

Don't know this to be a fact because I haven't done it, but if you pull the dowel pins (those threaded things that stick up) by running a nut down on them and remove the six other bolts, you may be able to slide the heavy belt pulley gearbox enough to remove the starter. The long bolts on top don't have to come all the way out. Lift them up a bit and hold them with clothes pins.

There must be a reason why IH threaded the dowel pins. I think that starter removal was that reason.

As a matter of interest, is the starter motor on an MD in a different place from an M? My M has a starter motor and a belt pulley, but the starter is fitted on the near side of the tractor, so it is easy to remove.

Shouldn't be a problem if you have the delete plate. I got my starter out by tipping it up to just clear the plate. It's close but will come out.
If you have the belt pulley gearbox, I don't know.

Hi all! Thankyou all for your replies. I did have to remove the pulley housing to get the starter out. I hope it goes back in easy. If not I'll be asking for your input again. Once again I appreciate all your input.

It's not that bad. It just plops in there.
