340 Brake return springs

Getting my 340U back together, finally

. . . I am open to ideas on putting the brake pedal return springs back on . . . these things are incredibly stiff and there's no way I'm going to pull them manually to get them hooked between the "floor boards" and the brake pedal arms. Thinking about some sort of turnbuckle and cable arrangement to pull them. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I use a 90-degree needle nose pliers to get a better hold and then do some pullin' and cussin' to get them back on. maybe someone here has an easier way.

That's what I think too when I do them on my 460U. I probably do them differently every time. Try a long screw driver and get in a position that you can use both hands on it. You might also try vice grips.

stop at an autobody supply store and pick up a dent pull rod. it is a tee handle with a hook on the end. works great on heavy springs. here is a link to show you what they look like.
poke here

Thanks for the ideas. Not a pleasant job no matter which way you do it. I ended up attaching a short length of small chain to a stationary point (loader frame) and another short length to the spring using an S hook, with a 1/4 inch bolt turn-buckle in between. Tightening the turn-buckle pulled the spring into place.

Glad that's done.
